Hello there!

Do you want to better understand data?

Are you struggling to create SQL queries?

Or struggle on how to create a database from scratch?

Learn how to understand databases so you can create databases the easy way or just learn how to write better queries, just by learning about what it takes model data!

I created this course, because I noticed that there were not many courses out there that really focused on the HOW to understand the data modeling process required to build out a database.

And how to create the metadata (it is basically data about the data... it's kinda circular, but you'll understand it by the end of the course, I promise 😉) to create one from existing datasets.

I have been in the IT field for a very long time (almost a decade 🤯) and spent most of my career supporting a production software's data -- so it was glaring obvious that a lot of these online coding courses that I have come across don't teach this well, extensively, or at all.

If you don't take the time to plan, you plan to fail -- this applies to databases as much as it does life.

Learning how to analyze and categorize data is a skillset that will help you to do so many things in any data career, even before you pick up SQL or any programming language, like Python!

I want to help you learn how to work with data from the beginning, before it even goes into a database and do it the painless way!

What to expect

The course is 5 days long. (If you are an early subscriber, I will be dripping the content as I create it.)

You can follow along with just about any spreadsheet program of your choice.

But if you are more technical or want to see how to do some of this analysis using Python programming, I will be doing quite a bit of coding in the walkthrough videos on YouTube.

Just know that you don't need to know programming to take this course, but I highly encourage you to start learning SQL now, if you don't know it.

The second lesson and beyond, we will be doing more technical work that will require some understanding of SQL and database management systems. Here's a really great, FREE SQL course.

If you decide to use a Jupyter notebook, go through Kaggle's Learn Python course (also free).

You can also take the FREE Python course through Codecedemy to prepare! (But if you find their courses great, you can use this link to get 50% of your Codecedemy membership, if you want to take any of their other courses.)

What you will do

You are going to help the fictional coffee shop, the HappyBean Café, with their data.

They want you to prepare their data by building a data model and dictionary from their existing datasets, so that a database can be built that combines their in-person, store front data with their online orders.

They have given us some of their datasets in spreadsheets and CSV files to work with, clean up and eventually will need to be uploaded to the new database.

Your homework is to try to build out the data dictionary template, that I will give you, and a database schema, which will help you build out a data model for a database to help the HappyBean Café.

Plus we will prep the data for upload!

Please note that your solution might be different from mine and that is OK -- And you will learn WHY by the end of this course!

You can follow along with me as I do walkthroughs on my YouTube channel. As you are going through the course, start thinking about what feedback you would give me, what you found surprising or challenging.

I would love to hear about how the course worked for you, so expect an email at the end about it.

Please feel free to reach out to me at any time, especially if you have any questions.

Thank you again for enrolling and you will receive the first lesson today!

Happy learning,
